Butterfly house in Southsea to get £100,000 upgrade

Cumberland House will get the new state-of-the-art facility thanks to a partnership between Portsmouth City Council and the Friends of Cumberland House.

The plans will allow a wider range of species and may bring in opportunities to improve other parts of the site.

Anita Stepnitz, joint-chair of Friends of Cumberland House, said: ‘We’re thrilled to be embarking on this very exciting project which can help the butterfly house reach its full potential.

‘We’re grateful to the council for supporting this.’

Cllr Linda Symes, the council’s cabinet member for culture, leisure and sport, added: ‘Cumberland House’s butterfly house has been a popular attraction for generations of Portsmouth families and I’m delighted by the prospect of making it even better.

‘We have an opportunity to enhance the butterfly house and bring it up to the modern standards you would expect of a visitor attraction and improve the gardens in which it sits.’
