The Hampshire branch of the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) is working on its Strategic Vision to protect the environment as well as support the future prosperity of the area.

One of its proposals is to create a green belt around urban areas.

Hampshire CPRE is now calling for local authorities and residents to sign their petition which has received nearly 10,000 signatures in two weeks.

Dee Haas, chairman, said: ‘Hampshire is facing many challenges and there are huge pressures to grow our economy and build more houses.

‘We must plan effectively, fully valuing our countryside and environment.

‘We live in one of the world’s most advanced and prosperous countries and we must plan growth with responsibility to our communities, both urban and rural, and our delicate environment. More unplanned and unco-ordinated sprawl is not an acceptable way ahead.’

CPRE Hampshire said it is important the local plans of council, which set out future development plans, include areas of countryside that need protecting as a green belt.
