Even the tradesmen posing for the photographer are smartly dressed, especially the chap who appears to be in charge of the milk or ice cream cart. And as for the women...

This picture is undated but was probably taken after 1901 which was when Portsmouth’s tram system was electrified. The overhead wires (look at those wonderful standards supporting them) give us a clue and I can’t see a horse pulling the tram, although it might be at the other end.

Worked out where we are yet? It’s Lawrence Road, Southsea, looking south with Norman Road on the left. If we were to swing the camera around to the right we would see today’s Lawrence Arms pub.

Look at the width of the road. I don’t think you’d get a bus down there today.
