POLICE were called to a road in Fratton yesterday evening following a three-car crash.

Motorists suffered rush-hour delays after the blue Peugeot 407, silver Volkswagen Golf and blue Ford Focus collided at the junction of St Marys Road and Whitcombe Gardens, at around 5pm.

South Central Ambulance Service attended and one person was taken to Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham.

A Hampshire Police spokesman said the extent of damage to the Peugeot and the Volkswagen was severe enough for the cars to be taken away by recovery truck.

Passing motorist Deborah Croker, of Milton, said: ‘I came across the aftermath of the collision.

‘There was a Silver VW golf being driven off on top of a recovery truck. It had front end damage that I could see.

‘As I came over the bridge, quite a way down the road was another vehicle involved, which was a blue Peugeot. The airbag had gone off and the bonnet was up.

‘It was facing the wrong way on the road, and I couldn’t understand why it was so far down the road or how it had come to rest so far away.’

The road was closed on one side while the clean up took place, before being fully reopened at 6.20pm.
