A CAR burst into flames when its owner turned it on.

It happened today, in Londesborough Road, Southsea, Portsmouth, at 12.05pm.

One appliance from Southsea fire station and one from Cosham went to put it out.

The fire spread from the engine to the dashboard in the fibreglass car. Nine firefighters were there as there were fears it could spread to a nearby home.

The crew from Southsea were initially on a call to a man stuck in a lift in Landport but he rescued himself.
