Rev Andy Norris, Rector of St Mary’s, Alverstoke, describes what’s in store at the annual Michaelmas fair later this month

PREPARATIONS are well underway for the annual Michaelmas fair in Alverstoke on Saturday September 26.

It’s a real opportunity to celebrate all that is great about our community – the people and the places that are part of our lives all year round.

It’s on from midday to 4pm.

There will be lots to see and do for all ages including plenty of stalls and sideshows, musical entertainment, food and drink and lots more besides.

But in amongst all of the hustle and bustle I would encourage you to take some time to look beyond all of the exciting stalls, tasty foods and music.

Look beyond to our community that is delighted to welcome all to its heart and to its annual fair.

Look beyond the stalls and you’ll see the shops and homes of the village which are Alverstoke all year round.

Many of the homes will have dressed up especially for the occasion with colourful displays.

Enjoy them and tell our Mayor which one you think should win the prize for the best decorated home.

Look beyond to the shops and businesses of Alverstoke who support the fair and consider how you support them, not only in the here and now, but all year round.

Look beyond to St.Mary’s Church where this year you will find on display the recently unveiled Alverstoke quilt.

Returned from the Gosport Discovery Centre, the quilt has taken three years to make and depicts the
celebrations of Alverstoke in 2012.

There will also be musical performances throughout the afternoon in the church. Take the opportunity to explore the building too.

Look beyond to the Gosport Rotary Club for helping to make the fair such a success on behalf of so many charitable causes to which we wish great success.

And finally look to the evening when the celebrations will conclude with the Michaelmas community concert with its last night of the proms style finale.

The concert begins at 7pm in the church. Entry is free.

It’s always such a great occasion and I’m really looking forward to it.

Do come along and celebrate the community that we are all a part of.
