Joelene is one half of the newlywed lesbian couple whose story hit the headlines last year after they were attacked in Portsmouth by a savage gang.

Joelene and her new wife Sarah were victims of a vicious homophobic attack where 15 men assaulted them outside the S2 Snooker Club in Kingston Road, Portsmouth, in April 2017.

However, with that behind them, the lovers sent out an empowering message in their celebration of gay pride during their extraordinary wedding on August 26 which was featured on the front page of The News last Wednesday.

Decked out with stunning flowers, llamas and wacky rainbow fish, Southend Barns, Chichester, erupted with happiness, tears and the overwhelming sense of real love as Sarah and Joelene tied the knot.

And their feet haven't touched the ground since. The happy couple spent their honeymoon in Wrexham, Wales, where they spent time relaxing in a hot tub and in the outdoors.

'˜It was lovely,' says Joelene. '˜We love nature '“ that's why our wedding followed a festival theme.'

But what has overwhelmed the couple the most is the responses from The News readers, who have greeted them with warmth and compassion.

'˜It's been fantastic,' says Joelene.

'˜So many people have got in contact with us, sending messages of support and kindness. It's been so lovely.'

And just when they thought the wedding-madness was going to calm down, Joelene confirms that that couldn't be more wrong.

'˜Married life is just crazy,' she laughs.
