AS the Portsmouth area gears up to welcome the Olympic torch next weekend, residents are being offered the chance to win tickets to events at London 2012.

And they will also have the opportunity to help the local community by nominating two projects for a £5,000 Community Fund grant.

The award scheme, running alongside the Olympic Torch Relay, is organised by Lloyds Banking Group and will grant the two UK projects with the most votes £5,000 each.

It was launched to recognise initiatives that unlock the potential of future generations in communities across the length and breadth of the country along the route of the Olympic Torch Relay.

Hampshire projects in the running for the Community Fund grant are Faith in Football and Motiv8.

Votes can be cast during the Portsmouth evening celebration on Southsea Common on Sunday, and anyone who registers a vote will be entered into the prize draw to win one of four pairs to events at the London 2012 Games.

Flame followers will also take to the stage to have their photo taken with the torch.

Sally Hancock, director of the 2012 Partnership at Lloyds Banking Group, said: ‘The launch of the Lloyds Banking Group Community Fund is another way in which the Olympic Torch Relay binds all of our programmes together in 2012.

‘It helps us give back to the communities in which we operate and pass through on our journey with the Olympic flame.’
