Charities set to get unsold shop groceries

SHOPS are donating food to an organisation that will distribute the items to charity.

All Tesco convenience stores have signed up to FareShare, which wants charities and community groups to sign up to the scheme.

It is aimed at stopping the throwing away of unsold produce, including fruit, vegetables, baked goods and meat.

Foodbanks, shelters, after-school clubs, and domestic violence refuges are among those eligible.

Last year Portsmouth stores collected 95,632 meals, which were donated.

Andy Cruttenden, store director at Tesco Extra in Portsmouth, said: ‘We’re so proud to already support local charities and community groups through Community Food Connection from our larger stores in Portsmouth and to be able to extend that support to our convenience stores is fantastic.
