A FUNDRAISING dinner at Hilsea Lido will bring dreams of reopening the pool one step closer.

The Hilsea Lido Pool for the People trust is working tirelessly to restore the historic site in the north of the city.

Trust vice-chairwoman Helen Downing-Emms said: ‘The lido provides fun and safe adventure for young people and it adds historic context to the city.’

Hilsea Lido opened in 1935 and has been part of Portsmouth for more than 75 years.

Since Portsmouth City Council closed the lido in 2008, the trust has been fighting to restore the pool to its former glory for the residents of the city.

Mrs Downing-Emms added: ‘I recognise how much I gained from the opportunity of going to lidos as a child and I want to make those opportunities available for young people today.’

And people are also eager to see the pool re-opened.

‘We’re being bombarded on Facebook with requests from over 2,700 followers about when the pool will open,’ she said.

‘There is a huge expectation about when the Lido will open and a huge desire as well.’

The three-course fundraising dinner will be held on April 11 at the Blue Lagoon, the lido’s function room, starting with welcome drinks at 7.30pm.

Tickets for the dinner are £20.
