Portsmouth High School played host to the Sir William Dupree and Phyllis Loe Chess Tournament, with prizes presented to the winners by the former Lord Mayor of Portsmouth, Councillor Frank Jonas.

Schools from across the Portsmouth area took part, including Langstone Junior School, Charter Academy and Portsmouth Academy for Girls, as well as Portsmouth High and Portsmouth Grammar, plus Fareham Chess Club and Portsmouth Junior Chess Club.

Nearly 100 children were involved in the competition.

‘This was a wonderful occasion to celebrate these young people’s commitment to playing chess,’ said Cllr Jonas.

‘This tournament is steeped in history as Sir William Dupree and Councillor Phyllis Loe were both Mayors of Portsmouth and it was a real privilege to present these trophies in their names.’

More than £1,000 was awarded in a prize-giving ceremony. The tournament was open to all young people from Portsmouth, the Isle of Wight and surrounding areas and supported by Portsmouth City Community Fund.

Sir William Thomas Dupree was an English brewer. In the early 1890s he became manager of the Simonds brewery in Portsmouth and later left to set up his own business, Portsmouth United Breweries. He was Mayor of Portsmouth twice in the early 1900s.

Councillor Phyllis Loe was Lord Mayor of Portsmouth in 1972. The tournament was set up for the encouragement of chess-playing by young people in and around Portsmouth.

Alan Butler, tournament controller, said: ‘This was an excellent tournament which has been running for many years in Portsmouth.

‘Chess provides an excellent foundation for their education and is a game that they can take on through to adulthood.’

Headmistress of Portsmouth High School, Jane Prescott, added: ‘All those taking part had a good time both at the tournament itself and at the presentation evening.

‘It was a wonderful way to use our facilities and we look forward to hosting again in 2017.’
