THOUSANDS of homes are now protected by a scheme trying to stop rogue traders.

Hampshire County Council has revealed nearly 14,000 homes are covered in the area.

The zones are set up by residents and police to discourage unwanted callers.

County council leader Councillor Roy Perry, said: ‘All residents should feel safe from unwanted callers, and these zones can help empower people to turn them away, and put a stop to what are often high-pressure doorstep sales tactics.’

In Fareham there are 79 zones covering 3,926 homes, while in Gosport there are 54 zones covering 3,800 homes, and in Havant there are 97 zones covering 6,207 homes.

The figures were revealed by the authority after the 100th zone was was set up in Winchester.
