Commemorative service marks 213 years of Nelson Monument overlooking Portsmouth

A COMMEMORATIVE service has been held to mark 213 years since the construction of a naval monument began.

Members of the Nelson Society staged the event at the Nelson Monument on Portsdown Hill on Monday.

The admiral is famed for his heroic, fatal efforts in the Royal Navy '“ especially at the Battle of Trafalgar '“ and his ship HMS Victory is based at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.

The poignant display earlier this week was also supported by cadets and ratings from HMS Collingwood in Fareham.

Royal Navy commander Trefor Fox, of the Officer Commanding Warfare Support Training Group at the base, laid a wreath at the event and called Horatio Lord Nelson an '˜inspirational leader'.

He said: '˜The loyalty his men felt for him is underlined by the fact that they erected this monument in his honour.

'˜Remembering him and his men and their sacrifice is as relevant today as it was 213 years ago.

'˜It is particularly poignant this year as we remember the Royal Naval Division, with Battalions named after Nelson and Collingwood, who fought on all fronts during the First World War that ended a century ago.'

Built after the battle in 1805, the monument can be seen from Portsmouth harbour.
