Community focus day is a huge success for pupils

From nursery and reception classes, all the way through to Year 6, pupils at Flying Bull Academy, in Buckland, baked cakes, filled shoeboxes full of gifts and made jewellery to give to people less fortunate than themselves.

The day began with an assembly where teachers explained the concept of charity and community and each class was told which activities they would be doing that day.

Deputy headteacher Lee Dallinger said ‘Our charity and community day has been such a success.

‘I think it will become a day that we revisit annually now.

‘It has been a delight to see children spending a day learning about local causes and supporting people in their local community.

‘The response from the local community has been fantastic and the children have a learning experience that they will always remember.’

Nursery pupils made gifts and get well cards to give to children and staff at the children’s ward at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Cosham.

Year 1 focussed on improving the school by creating posters.

Children in Year 2 cooked a big batch of pea and ham soup, which was delivered to a local soup kitchen.

Year 3 designed and filled shoeboxes for the shoebox appeal.

Bird feeders were made by Year 4 youngsters to help animals through the winter.

Volunteers from a food bank visited Year 5 and inspired the children to design posters advertising the food banks.

Year 6 visited charity shops in London Road, North End to find out about their role in supporting communities. They then designed posters for the charity Scope.

Mr Dallinger added: ‘The day was a massive success.’
