NEIGHBOURS have spoken of their concern after a blaze ravaged a home and damaged a house next to it.
The fire on the roof of an MoD-owned terraced home in Bucksey Road, Rowner in Gosport saw its roof destroyed along with nearly all of the first floor.
The blaze, which happened at 10.10pm last night, saw firefighters from Gosport, Fareham, Cosham, Portchester, and an aerial ladder platform from Redbridge attend.
Gwyn Drapier, 57, of Bucksey Road, lives further up the road and saw the fire.
She said: ‘It was horrendous, with orange flames leaping out of the roof – it had obviously gone up quite quickly. Initially I thought I heard a pellet gun but it was the flames.’
The severely damaged home was unoccupied at the time.
But neighbours said children were inside the second home and were evacuated.
Maggie Hammond, 64, of Bucksey Road, lives opposite the house and said she smelt something at 9pm and thought it was in her home.
She said: ‘It was gone 10pm when I saw all these blue lights going and pulled the curtains back a bit and saw the flames.
‘It could have been really serious had it taken hold and gone across.’
She believes someone set fire to the home.
‘It is concerning and I just can’t understand why they did it,’ she said.
Firefighters today classed the cause as ‘doubtful’ and said they were investigating.
The MoD Police said it is awaiting the results of the fire service’s investigation.
