HOST families are needed to look after children visiting the UK on the 25th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster.

Each year families in Havant and Waterlooville play host to youngsters from Belarus who visit for a much-needed month-long break.

Here they are given free dental and eye check-ups and treatment if needed.

Many have relatives and friends who were affected by the nuclear power station disaster.

Shelagh Wedeman, one of the area co-ordinators, said: ‘To commemorate this catastrophic event and help the children of Belarus and the Ukraine, who are still suffering, a candlelit vigil will be held throughout the UK and Europe in as many locations as possible at 8pm on April 25, the eve of the anniversary of the disaster. We need sponsors, donations and host families.’
