Council investigates illegal fly-tipping of 500 tyres in Chichester

MORE than 500 tyres have been dumped illegally in the past three weeks.

Chichester District Council is appealing to residents for information following the fly-tipping in seven rural locations since August 21.

The village of Colworth has experienced two incidents, with a total of 50 tyres being dumped.

Officers believe the incidents may be linked, and follow a series of similar incidents involving tyres in the Arun district.

Cllr Roger Barrow, cabinet member for residents’ services, said: ‘The number of tyres dumped in such a short space of time is unprecedented.

‘Fly tipping is unsightly and damages our environment.

‘It is also expensive – each year our council spends more than £52,000 clearing illegally dumped waste from our district. Items like tyres need to be specially disposed of so this costs local tax payers even more.’
