Councillor asks people to look in on elderly relatives and neighbours

PEOPLE are being asked to keep an eye on vulnerable family members, friends and neighbours over the festive period.

Councillor Liz Fairhurst, Hampshire County Council’s executive member for adult social care said: ‘While many of us are looking forward to spending time with family and friends this Christmas, for many elderly and vulnerable people it can be a time of loneliness.

‘With research showing that 60 per cent of people aged over 65 may be alone this Christmas, it’s important to think about how small gestures can make a big difference.

‘A knock on the door to check whether someone needs anything, or an invitation in for a sherry or a hot drink and some food can make the world of difference. It will help that person know that someone is looking out for them.’

Anyone who is worried about a vulnerable person in the area, which covers the whole county except for Portsmouth and Southampton, should contact the council’s adult services team on 0300 555 138.
