Councillors offer condolences to family of man killed in Clanfield crash

POLICE have named the man who died after his van hit a tree last week.

George Ayres, 38, died in the crash on Old Mill Lane, near Clanfield, on the evening of October 25.

Mr Ayres, from Waterlooville, was pronounced dead at the scene after his Ford Transit van left the road.

Police were called to the scene at 7.20pm. Firefighters from Waterlooville and Horndean also attended the crash site but there was nothing they could do to save the driver.

Police say that the family of Mr Ayres did not wish to comment at this time.

Councillor Michael Cheshire, leader of Havant Borough Council, said: ‘It’s absolutely awful to hear that this sort of thing has happened and for the people of our borough to bear these things.’

Waterloo ward councillor Peter Wade offered his condolences to the family and said he would make a donation to a charity of their choosing.

Cllr Ken Moon, Clanfield and Finchdean ward councillor for East Hampshire District Council, added: ‘It’s always a great tragedy when someone loses their life in these circumstances.’
