ALMOST one in five people were not able to work all their hours because of the bad weather over the past week, according to a new study.

In the Portsmouth area, snowfall caused outpatient appointments at Queen Alexandra Hospital to be cancelled, First bus to stop services, and scores of schools to shut. As reported, it potentially cost businesses a £1m loss.

A survey of more than 2,000 workers nationally by Green Flag Breakdown showed one in five had been too afraid to drive because of the icy and snowy conditions, and a further five per cent tried to take to the road but had to turn back.

One in eight turned to public transport instead of driving to work, the survey revealed.

Green Flag reported an 88 per cent increase in calls from stranded motorists compared with the same week last year.
