A car caught fire when a couple were driving to their home in Gosport early today..

The drama happened in Hayes Terrace at around 12.15am.

A spokesman at Gosport Fire Station said the car, a Citroën Saxo hatchback, was destroyed in the blaze.

He said a man and a woman, who lived locally, got out of the car and called for help when they noticed the engine was on fire.

The spokesman said: ‘They’d just turned into their road when the engine caught on fire.’

Six firefighters used two breathing apparatus and one hose reel to extinguish the flames.

The spokesman said the cause of the fire was unknown.
