POLICE have named the driver who died in a car crash earlier this week.

Peter Lonsdale, 45, from Gosport, was killed instantly when his red Citroen Xantia came off the road and hit a tree shortly before 5am on Tuesday.

He had been driving along the the A272 at Kitts Lane, east of Bramdean, near Petersfield, when the accident happened.

The stretch was closed to West Meon Hut crossroads for 11 hours to allow for the vehicle to be recovered and the road to be cleared of debris.

Senior Investigating Officer, Sergeant Wayne Voller, said: ‘I’d urge anyone who may have witnessed the collision to make contact with us as soon as possible.’

Witnesses to the crash are asked to contact Sgt Voller on 101, quoting Operation Gainsborough.
