A CYCLIST has been taken to hospital by air ambulance with serious head injuries following a crash in Wickham.
The accident caused tailbacks after it closed the A334 in both directions.
The incident, involving a cyclist and a van, happened just after 7am this morning in Winchester Road, Wickham.
Police closed roads in the area and long delays built.
A spokesperson for South Central Ambulance Service said: ‘We received a call at 7.12am this morning to Titchfield Lane, in Wickham, to a road traffic collision involving a van and a cyclist.
‘We sent an ambulance crew, an ambulance officer and Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance to treat one patient.
‘The patient sustained head injuries as a result of the collision and they were taken to Southampton General Hospital by air ambulance with serious injuries.’
A police spokesman said: ‘We are appealing for witnesses following a serious road traffic incident on the B2177 near Wickham this morning.
‘Shortly before 7.15am a white Sprinter van was involved in a collision with a cyclist on Winchester Road.
‘The cyclist, a man in his 50s, was taken to Southampton General Hospital by air ambulance with serious injuries.
‘If you saw this incident please contact PC Rob Tompkins at the Eastern Roads Policing Unit on 101 quoting Operation Arrows.’
Road closures are currently in place between Wickham and Bishops Waltham.
