OWNERS of smaller shops in the city are urged to be on alert following a rise in burglaries.

Since the start of November there have been over 80 reports of burglaries at smaller shops and independent retailers in residential areas.

Areas affected are London Road, Kingston Road, Tangier Road, Copnor Road, Milton Road, Havant Road, Osborne Road and Commercial Road. Cash or electrical items have been stolen overnight.

Crime prevention advisor Sarah Cohen said: ‘We are advising smaller shop owners in Portsmouth not to leave cash or valuable items on the premises at night. Neighbourhood Policing teams have also given out signs to put in the windows to advertise the fact that no cash is left in the store.

‘Any security devices such as CCTV and alarms should always be activated.’
