MORE than 9,200 out-of-date distress flares were handed in to police as part of amnesty events at marinas.
Six events were held in the Solent area, including Northney Marina on Hayling, to encourage private boat owners to hand in out-of-date distress flares.
The disposal of out-of-date flares is a growing problem for boat owners who face severe penalties if they fail to follow the correct procedures.
The operation was supported by Fareham-based bomb disposal company Ramora UK. Owners were asked to donate at least £2 for each flare handed in and more than £6,000 was raised for charity, including buying a new dinghy for young sailors.
