AN unprovoked assault during the early hours of Christmas Eve has prompted a police appeal.

Two men were attacked in Hampshire Terrace at around 1.30am, while walking home from Gunwharf Quays.

Police say a man approached them and asked them if they were from Portsmouth. The two men carried on walking, but the man then shouted ‘excuse me’, and assaulted one of the men.

The offender appeared to be with a group of men.

One victim, a 19-year-old man, suffered bruised ribs, arms, head and legs. He was also cut below one of his eyes.

The offender was white, around 5ft 8in, and has dark chin-length messy hair and a small amount of facial hair.

He was wearing a grey or brown cardigan or a duffle coat.

PC Lucy Allan said: ‘We are keen to identify the man responsible and I am appealing to witnesses to come forward, particularly any of the group in the company of the offender.’

Call PC Allan on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
