POLICE are appealing for a man who helped a woman after she was sexually assaulted to come forward.

Officers were called shortly after 9.30pm on Thursday after the 23-year-old woman was attacked by another man in an alleyway that connects London Road and Gladys Avenue, in North End, Portsmouth.

A good samaritan then came along and comforted her while she was in tears, before walking her to London Road in the search for more help.

Senior investigating officer Detective Inspector John Geden said: ‘Specialist officers are working with the woman and family members to offer care and support for her welfare.

‘Enquiries are at a very early stage as officers speak with the woman to establish the full circumstances.

‘What we know so far is that a man, who is not a suspect, helped the 23-year-old while she was in tears and clearly upset on Thursday night.’

Forensic enquiries took place yesterday. The good samaritan was described as being white, in his 30s, 5ft 10 ins tall and of slim build with short, dark hair. This man or any witnesses are asked to contact Havant police on 101.
