Detectives launched a major operation after the burglary on Monday night and taped off the garden of the Toby Carvery pub two miles away in Copnor Road as part of an investigation.

The 29-year-old victim told The News: ‘All they done (sic) was come and hold guns up to me and my kids.’

Police, led by a detective inspector, have arrested five men on suspicion of burglary and other offences and are questioning them.

Police did not reveal further details of the other offences or why the Toby Carvery in Hilsea was taped off.

A spokesman said no-one was seriously injured and nothing was taken in the incident at 8.11pm but did not give details of anyone hurt.

Yesterday, people living in the Buckland area told of their fears after the raid. A 35-year-old mother, who did not want to be named, said: ‘I just heard before eight a little bit of shouting that was going on.

‘Afterwards I thought maybe something big happened.

‘I don’t feel safe now even in my own house.’

She added: ‘For a burglary to happen in the late evening that’s a bit weird.

‘Normally it happens early morning or late night.’

Police said the burglary was an isolated incident.

Another woman, 30, living in the road said: ‘I had no idea, absolutely nothing.

‘It’s worrying to hear there was guns involved.

‘I’m definitely worried, I’ve got a little one and it’s usually a child-friendly area, kids run about freely in this area.’

Forensics teams were working in the cordoned-off garden at the Toby Carvery yesterday afternoon.

The News understands officers yesterday took copies of the pub’s CCTV.

A 79-year-old woman living in Sultan Road added: ‘It makes you wonder what’s going on. It seems dreadful. It’s awful if they were going to shoot one of the kids.’

The police spokesman added: ‘Five people have been arrested in connection to this incident on suspicion of offences including burglary.

‘Inquiries have continued overnight, including at an address on Copnor Road.’
