Two of those arrests were made during the public order incident in Goldsmith Avenue after the match, police have said.

Sgt Rob Sutton, of Portsmouth police, said: ‘A handful of supporters from both sides came to blows at Goldsmith Avenue at its junction with Talbot Road, after what was a rather well-mannered game between fans.’

‘Arrests were for drunk and disorderly, a racial incident and breaching a dispersal order.

‘No injuries were sustained.’

He added: ‘Good work by Hampshire and Gwent Police intelligence officers meant we were able to identify potential incidents and stop them from happening.

‘The stewards did a great job with the fans too, engagement as well as identifying troublemakers.’

The match had been classified as a potential risk game due to previous encounters.
