FIREFIGHTERS tackled several small blazes and have warned anyone setting fires could put lives at risk.

A senior firefighter says arsonists could trigger a major incident.

Crews were called out to a hedge fire in St Matthew’s Court in Gosport at 3.50pm yesterday.

Then they were called to a bin fire at 5.10pm in Stoke Road, before being called to another bin fire in the open at Gosport War Memorial Hospital in Bury Road at 5.45pm.

At 6.55pm, a crew was called to Whites Place for another bin fire.

Blue watch manager Tim Harrison said in his experience such fires could be the work of one person setting them.

He said: ‘There could be a much more serious call whilst were committed at that incident.

‘I’ve been at bin fires that can spread to buildings and put lives at risk.

‘People don’t know the contents of the bin, there could be aerosol.

‘It could easily cause harm to somebody.’

A crew was also sent to Mumby Road to tackle a small bush fire just before 4pm.

The blazes happened on Wednesday night.

No-one was reported to be injured.
