THREE cigarette lighters were ignited and posted through a letterbox during an attempted arson attack.

The lighters, which were wrapped in toilet paper, were set on fire and then put through the letterbox of a home in Chapel Street, near Bakery Lane, Petersfield.

Detective Constable Ewan Gardener, from Alton CID, said: ‘Thankfully the person living in the flat was awake and quickly extinguished the fire with a glass of water.

‘This could have had a devastating outcome. We are keeping an open mind as to the motive but we do not believe this is a random attack.’

The attack happened between 1.20am and 1.40am yesterday.

Anyone with information should call police on 101.
