DETECTIVES have charged a man with attempted murder following a stabbing on Hayling Island over the weekend.

Jay Anthony Shepherd, of Ramsey Road, Hayling Island, has been charged with the crime, police have said.

The 48-year-old appeared for an initial hearing at Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court yesterday morning where he spoke only to confirm his name, age and address. After the hearing he was remanded in custody.

Police said Shepherd was arrested after a man was found with a stab wound in Station Road, Hayling Island, in the early hours of the Sunday morning. The victim, a 47-year-old from Havant, was taken to Southampton General Hospital, where police say he remains in a ‘serious but stable’ condition.

As previously reported, residents near the scene of the alleged attack told of their shock over the weekend. Mollie Edwards, who lives near Station Road, said: ‘I was in total shock when I heard what had happened.’

Shepherd will appear at Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court on January 2 for a pre-trial plea hearing.
