A WOULD-BE robber got more than he bargained for when he launched a cowardly attack on a woman as she walked along a Portsmouth street.

The crook had tried to steal her mobile phone.

But he fled in panic when, instead of giving up her property, she turned and headbutted him.

The 31-year-old woman was walking in Sultan Road, Buckland, when the man approached her and asked her for the time.

When she reached to get her mobile phone the suspect grabbed hold of her arm and tried to steal it.

The victim then headbutted the man in the face and he fled the scene at about 12.45am on Monday.

Detective Constable Chris Dinenage, said: ‘This was a terrifying ordeal for the victim which has left her very shaken. I would ask anyone with information about this man to come forward.

‘We will be increasing patrols in the area and as always I would ask residents to take care when out after dark and report any suspicious activity to the police or Crimestoppers.’

The suspect is black, about 5ft 3in tall and of a medium build with short dreadlocks.

Call Det Con Dinenage at Fraton CID on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
