COUNCILLORS have united in speaking out against the crime of female genital mutilation.
Politicians in West Sussex have passed a council motion to ensure a commitment to protecting all girls in West Sussex from the abuse.
Awareness will be raised through schools and public information.
Cllr Louise Goldsmith, leader of the Chichester-based authority, said: ‘The first step in doing anything against such a brutal attack on any young person is to have the shining light of exposure on it and today, in this chamber, this is what we have done.
‘For it is only when you highlight the corners can you see the dust and sweep it out.’
In Britain 16,000 girls under the age of 15 are at risk of FGM.
