Phil Hewitt (pictured), from Bishop’s Waltham, had just watched a match in Cape Town, South Africa when he was attacked.

Phil, the entertainment editor of The News’ sister paper the Chichester Observer, was stabbed twice in the leg before being beaten, leaving him with two broken ribs.

He had to have 11 stitches and doctors are monitoring him for liver damage.

Phil got lost whilst walking home and a man ‘suddenly launched at him’, demanding he hand over his camera.

He explained: ‘Stupidly I resisted and his reaction was to thump me in the upper and lower left leg and push me into the ground, where we tussled.

‘When he started kicking my leg, I saw it was streaming with blood. He had stabbed me.’
