POLICE are investigating a huge blaze at a derelict club.

The Old Sailors Rest, in St Nicholas Avenue, Rowner, Gosport, was engulfed by flames at 7pm last night (SUN).

Police had been called to the building earlier in the evening when neighbours spotted youngsters messing around inside.

Fire tore through the front of the building and it took 30 firefighters from Gosport, Fareham and Cosham attended almost two hours to get it under control.

The building was used as a community centre for ex service personnel in Gosport but has been closed for around 18 months.

Since it closed it has been targeted by vandals and is now boarded up.

A spokesman for the fire service said the council and the owners will have to make a decision on whether the building should be demolished and added: ‘The floors and stairs and very dangerous now. The building is substantially burned out.’
