THE body of a man washed up on Hayling beach on New Year’s Day has finally been identified.

After several weeks of inquiries, police have named the dead man as Eric Williams, 60, of Dillwyn Road, Sketty, Swansea.

As reported in The News, his body was discovered by a member of the public on the beach near to the junction of Southwood Road and Bosmere Road at Eastoke.

Police launched an appeal for information, stretching as far as Cornwall and Wales.

The appeal included a detailed description of tattoos on the body.

Mr Williams was finally identified through DNA analysis.

Police said his family have been informed.

His death is not believed to be suspicious and a file has been passed to the coroner.

An inquest will take place at a later date to determine how he died.
