Bomb alert at Saints football ground

Hampshire Police sounded the all-clear after a bomb alert at Southampton's St Mary's stadium last night.

They were called to the ground after reports that a suspect device had been spotted in a toilet block.

But officers determined that it was not explosive and posed no danger.

The incident happened just before a testimonial match for long-serviong Saints goalkeer Kelvin Davis and follows the abandonment of the Manchester United v Bournemouth match on Sunday when a fake bomb accidentally left behind after a training exercise sparked a terror alert that led to the evacuation of Old Trafford.

Hampshire Police said in a statement: ‘We can confirm we were called to St Mary’s Stadium, Southampton just before 7.30pm on Tuesday, May 17 following a report of a suspicious device on the premises.

‘The allegation was made to security staff by a member of the public. Police officers and security staff quickly established there was no threat to anyone in the stadium and control of the incident was passed back to security staff. No evacuation was necessary.

‘Police are looking further into the details of this incident to establish whether any criminal investigation will follow.’
