Bomb scare at Southsea beach

But when officers examined the item, found near Southsea Beach Cafe, it turned out to be a ground spike.

Hampshire police were called at 10.21am, a spokesman said.

He added: ‘Police were called at 10.21am by a member of the public reporting they had found suspected unexploded ordnance on Southsea beach.

‘A cordon was put in place.

‘Following enquiries, the object was deemed not to be unexploded ordnance.

‘The local council is dealing with the item.’
