WOULD-be thieves broke into a department store and ripped open all the tills.

Crooks broke into the Marks and Spencer shop at Hedge End in a bid to steal cash from the tills, only to find they are emptied overnight.

Kevin Friery, from Copnor, said: ‘I was there at 9am on Monday so I could get in and out before the crowds. All of the upstairs tills were out of action and they had been cordoned off.

‘One of the girls told me that they had smashed their way in through the food hall and caused a bit of damage. Some of the staff looked quite shaken up.’

Police confirmed there had been a break-in at the store on Tollbar Way at about midnight on Sunday. Staff at the store refused to comment.
