THIEVES stole the collection box from an ancient church.

Police are appealing for information following the burglary at St Hubert’s Church, in Idsworth, near Finchdean.

Between 8am and 6.30pm on Wednesday or between 8am and 10am on Thursday, someone entered the church and took the donations box from the wall inside the main hall of the church.

The box is a grey metal safe, approximately 12in by 12in.

PC Robert Bramble said: ‘The donations box was recently emptied so there would have been little money in it, but the damage done to the ancient church wall will be expensive to repair.

‘This is an opportunist crime that happened while the church was open to the public, so we are hoping someone may have information about those responsible.’

The chapel is believed to be around 1,000 years old.

Anyone with information should contact PC Robert Bramble at Waterlooville police station on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111
