Calls for action as assaults on police officers soar

THREE police officers are attacked every day in Hampshire, new statistics show.

Now Hampshire Police Federation has said attacking police should be treated as a hate crime.

Figures show there were 1,118 physical and verbal assaults last year.

Officers have faced punches, kicks and even eye gouging.

Federation chairman John Apter said assaulting an officer should be classed as a hate crime.

This term is currently reserved for attacks based on religion, race or sexuality.

Mr Apter said: ‘They are not society’s punch bags and they deserve the support of government and the wider judicial system.’
