A CAMPAIGN to highlight the impact of cable and lead thefts on our railways has been launched.

Calls are being made for communities in our area to take a stand against the thefts, which cause delays for thousands of rail passengers every week.

During the past three years cable theft on the railway has cost more than £43m.

It has also led to 16,000 hours of delays – a loss of more than 666 days of rail travel.

Network Rail, the British Transport Police and the Association of Train Operating Companies have joined forces for the campaign.

Anyone with information about thefts from the railways is urged to call Hampshire police on 101.
