SERIOUS crimes such as burglaries and assaults fell last month in Portsmouth, new figures show.

Statistics released by Hampshire Constabulary show that during December, burglaries, robberies and vehicle crime were reduced by almost half compared to the same period last year. Reported rape offences fell from 11 to eight and serious assaults fell by 26 per cent during the period.

Officers say it follows a major crackdown to reduce disorder, particularly during the evenings at pubs and clubs. A video, called One Punch Can Kill, was played in pubs and clubs at Gunwharf Quays and patrols were also stepped up.
