The cash poured in after our sister paper The Chichester Observer’s story on Bodie being savagely mauled by another dog close to Bosham Harbour.

The injured Labrador-cross’s condition however has deteriorated, meaning Bodie has had to undergo even more surgery, pushing the vet’s bill well over the initial £3,000 fundraising target.

As reported, the family’s insurance for Bodie only ran out last month after it failed to renew has it had previously.

Owner Natascha Relf said her four children remain traumatised and the incident has left the whole family unable to enjoy the summer holidays.

“As of today the funds are up to just under £1,500,” said Natascha. “We are so, so grateful to everyone who has donated, but we have had to raise the target to £5,000 due to the second surgery and ongoing vet appointments, medications and check ups.

“As a family we are still very traumatised and unable to enjoy our summer holidays.

The attack happened close to Bosham Harbour while Natascha’s 15-year-old son, Khaian, was walking Bodie on a lead.

Khaian bravely managed to fight off the loose Staffordshire bull terrier which attacked Bodie, more than likely saving its life. The Staffie has since been destroyed.

Bodie suffered horrific injuries which could require even more surgery.

Natascha said: “Bodie is not great. The wounds are not healing well and he is reluctant to move or eat.

“He has been through over several hours of surgery under general anaesthetic in less than a week, and it is possible he may need more.

Sussex Police are aware of the incident and are understood to be investigating.
