CCTV images have been released after a man followed a pensioner home on a three-mile bus ride to steal her purse and £200 in cash.

The 82-year-old woman was followed from a charity shop in Fareham through the town centre to the bus station.

The man then got on the same bus as the victim and followed her home to Hill View Road, Portchester.

Police say he then distracted her by saying his cat was in her back garden before stealing her purse out of her handbag next to the front door. It contained £200 in cash.

It happened at 2.45pm on June 4. Hampshire police released details yesterday.

The purse was navy or black, about 6in long and had a flower design.

Detective Constable Samantha Gee wants to hear from anyone who recognises the man in the CCTV.

She said: ‘This is an unusual incident and I would urge people to be vigilant. If you’re approached by someone you don’t know, make sure you keep valuable belongings with you and safe at all times.

‘If you witness any suspicious activity or know who may be responsible for this incident, please contact the police.’ Call police on 101 quoting 44140196592.
