THIS image of a key witness who intervened while a woman was being attacked has been released by detectives.

Police are appealing for the man to come forward as part of their investigation into the attack.

It follows a report that a 25-year-old woman was seriously assaulted in Fawcett Road, Southsea, at about 1.30am on April 30.

Police believe the man pictured intervened and could be a key witness in their investigation.

Detective Constable Julie Way, from Portsmouth CID, who is investigating the incident, said: ‘The victim was found with severe bruising and swelling to her eyes and one of her cheeks after it’s alleged she was assaulted by a man.

‘The Fawcett Road area was busy at the time with people returning from Royal Wedding celebrations.

‘We’re now in a position to release a CCTV image of a potential key witness.

‘It’s believed this man is of Polish or Eastern European origin.

‘We understand he intervened and may have prevented the victim from suffering further serious injury.’

Anyone with information is asked to contact Det Con Way at Fratton police station on 0845 045 45 45 or 101. Alternatively call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
