TWO men have been charged over an alleged £1m tax dodge scam.

Jean-Francois Marc and Morgan Moiteaux are accused of trying to smuggle cigarettes into the UK through Portsmouth’s ferry port.

Marc, 49, and Moiteaux, 26, both from France, did not enter pleas to a charge of fraudulent evasion of duty to the value of between £800,000 and £1m when they appeared at Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court.

The pair were released on bail until later this month when the case will be sent to Portsmouth Crown Court.

Both men have returned to France but they must report to the French police twice a week and stay at their home addresses.
