A HAVANT-BASED mortgage broker is warning of a new scam.

YesCanDo Money wants to highlight the scam after hearing about a client’s relative who had thousands of pounds stolen.

Fraudsters call your home telephone number and say they are the bank’s fraud department and that your account has been compromised. They then tell you to call the number on the back of your debit card straight away, although they do not disconnect the call and simply play a dialling tone.

The fraudsters then pretend to be the bank and answer the phone call. Once they have the information, they then steal from your bank account.

Owner of YesCanDo Money in Langstone Harbour, Steve Roberts, said: ‘It seems to me that they have taken the scam to the next level.

‘You think you are doing the right thing by hanging up and calling the official telephone number, but it’s still them.

‘The way to get round this to is phone someone you know before phoning them back. They will think you are calling your bank as they have instructed and will pretend to be the bank. Make sure the phone line is working, then ring the bank’s number.’
