A HOMELESS man who assaulted a police officer has been told to get help for his drink problem.

Paul Ryan assaulted PC Mark Kennedy after police were called to a disturbance at a property in Edinburgh Road, Landport, Portsmouth.

Unemployed Ryan pleaded guilty to assaulting an officer in the execution of his duty and a public order offence when he appeared at Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court.

The 24-year-old was ordered to undergo alcohol counselling as part of a 12-month community order.

The magistrates decided not to order Ryan to pay any compensation to PC Kennedy or court costs because he could not afford it.
